The beauty of the city of Cividale del Friuli.
During our stay in Italy, we visited the beautiful, yet small town of Cividale del Friuli. The town was founded by Gaius Julius Caesar himself in 50 BC. (to make you realize how old this city is, let’s just add that it was 2074 years ago). The city, because it is old and culturally and historically rich, has a huge variety of monuments and places worth visiting. In this city there are, among others, the oldest house in the region (which belonged to a jeweler) and the Lombard Temple of Saint Mary in Valle, which was a women’s monastery and today is a museum.
In our opinion, the most interesting monument of the city is Ponde del Diavolo (Devil’s Bridge), which was built in the 15th century. From the technical specifications of the bridge, it can be mentioned that it has three bases, and since the bridge was built in a place where the banks of the Natisone River have different heights and slopes, its structure is uneven. However, it is not as interesting as the legend associated with this bridge. The inhabitants, tired of the long and ineffective process of building the bridge, in an act of desperation, concluded a pact with the devil, according to which the evil spirit was to build the bridge in one night, but at the price of the soul of the first creature to pass through it. However, Devil did not say that he was expecting a human soul, so people sacrificed an animal soul. The bridge is worth visiting not only because of the interesting legend, but also for practical reasons – from the bridge you can see the Natisone River beautifully.
When we visited the city, there was a march of drummers and people holding flags. Various festivals are held regularly in the city. After a hard day of sightseeing, it’s worth taking a break and eating something. Fortunately, in Cividale del Friuli you can taste both famous local sweets, such as gubana, and salty delicacies. In our opinion, the most noteworthy delicacy you can taste here is frico.
To sum up, Cividale del Friuli is a city worth adding to your list of places to visit.
